Sweden at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Sweden's route to World Cup 2026 was not a clean, confident procession. In some ways, that may help them. A side that had to find itself late under a new coach now arrives in North America knowing it can survive pressure rather than simply expect to avoid it.

How Sweden Qualified For World Cup 2026

FIFA's official report says Sweden reached the finals through the Path B UEFA play-offs. After missing out in the main qualifying group and finishing bottom of Group B, they still stayed alive via their Nations League ranking.

From there, Graham Potter's team eased past Ukraine in the semi-final and then beat Poland 3-2 in Solna thanks to an 88th-minute Viktor Gyokeres winner. The fact that Poland had knocked Sweden out at the same stage before Qatar 2022 gave the result extra emotional weight.

That route matters because it shows Sweden can recover from a poor position and still finish under stress. For a tournament team, that is not meaningless experience.

Key Players to Watch

Viktor Gyökeres

Forward

Arsenal

FIFA's Sweden qualification report highlighted Gyokeres's late winner against Poland, underlining his status as the side's current attacking reference point.

Dejan Kulusevski

Midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur

Kulusevski adds creativity and ball-carrying that Sweden badly need when matches stop being purely physical.

Alexander Isak

Forward

Liverpool

FIFA noted that Isak missed the play-offs through injury but was expected back before the finals, which is crucial to Sweden's attacking ceiling.

Victor Lindelöf

Defender

Manchester United

Lindelof remains an important organiser at the back and a key figure in the team's tournament-level composure.

What Potter's Sweden Can Lean On

Gyokeres, Kulusevski and Isak give Sweden more attacking quality than many mid-tier European teams can claim. Lindelof and the wider defensive spine then provide enough structure to keep the side from becoming too loose.

This is still a team that will welcome physical games. Sweden rarely look uncomfortable when the match becomes direct and emotionally sharp.

The challenge is finding enough control against more technically dominant sides. If the ball keeps coming back too often, even a strong attacking line can become disconnected.

Group F Outlook

In this site's draw, Sweden are in Group F with the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia. That is one of the more balanced and tactically varied groups in the tournament.

Sweden should believe they can progress, but the margin is slim. Every match in this section looks capable of swinging on small details.

World Cup History

Appearances:12
Best Finish:Runners-up (1958)

Sweden has a proud World Cup history with 12 appearance(s). Their best run reached the Runners-up (1958).

One to Watch — Viktor Gyökeres

Gyokeres has become the clearest symbol of Sweden's current attacking hope. In a difficult group, his efficiency could define the entire campaign.

Prediction

Sweden have enough quality to fight seriously for a knockout place if the attack stays healthy. The group is hard, but not prohibitive.

If the team keep the matches physical and close, they can absolutely stay alive until the final matchday and perhaps beyond.
