Sweden's route to World Cup 2026 was not a clean, confident procession. In some ways, that may help them. A side that had to find itself late under a new coach now arrives in North America knowing it can survive pressure rather than simply expect to avoid it.
How Sweden Qualified For World Cup 2026
FIFA's official report says Sweden reached the finals through the Path B UEFA play-offs. After missing out in the main qualifying group and finishing bottom of Group B, they still stayed alive via their Nations League ranking.
From there, Graham Potter's team eased past Ukraine in the semi-final and then beat Poland 3-2 in Solna thanks to an 88th-minute Viktor Gyokeres winner. The fact that Poland had knocked Sweden out at the same stage before Qatar 2022 gave the result extra emotional weight.
That route matters because it shows Sweden can recover from a poor position and still finish under stress. For a tournament team, that is not meaningless experience.
Key Players to Watch
What Potter's Sweden Can Lean On
Gyokeres, Kulusevski and Isak give Sweden more attacking quality than many mid-tier European teams can claim. Lindelof and the wider defensive spine then provide enough structure to keep the side from becoming too loose.
This is still a team that will welcome physical games. Sweden rarely look uncomfortable when the match becomes direct and emotionally sharp.
The challenge is finding enough control against more technically dominant sides. If the ball keeps coming back too often, even a strong attacking line can become disconnected.
